Philosophy of Librarianship
Since the advent of the written word, there have been individuals dedicated to the preservation of recorded information. As librarians, we inherit these responsibilities of custodianship over the human record. The essence of librarianship is to strive for the acquisition of knowledge while also working to make that knowledge as accessible as possible to those we serve. The librarian aims not only to preserve the knowledge and wisdom of the world, but also to educate others in how to make the fullest use of that knowledge. It is in this sense that the librarian truly embodies philosophia, the love of wisdom.
Traditions of Service
The MLIS program at Dominican stresses that librarianship is a career steeped in tradition and focused on service. One of my first major projects upon entering the program was to investigate the history of the library as an institution, particularly in ancient Greece and Rome. This project culminated in a short paper and presentation that gave me a better understanding of the profession's history and the ways in which our predecessors preserved knowledge for posterity.
